My Dad (pictured on the right at left. Huh?) and I went to see Robert Crais today. He is the author of the Elvis Cole mystery books. His latest, The Watchman, features Elvis' partner Joe Pike. His books are fast-paced, well-developed, and great fun to read. I highly recommend his series. When he started in the business he wrote for such TV shows as Hill Street Blues, Cagney and Lacey, and Miami Vice. I bet he wore loafers without socks.
He is pretty funny and very nice in to his readers. I bought a book and an advertising poster board. He signed the board "For Joe Pike's Main Squeeze." Jeff is going to start wondering about me and my fictional men. His signature in my book is something similar. Plus, I won't mention the obvious about Robert Crais other than it rhymes with ransome and soxy even if he is wearing that silly shamrock around his neck.
We went to see Robert Crais at Mystery One bookstore on the East Side. This is a tiny gem in Milwaukee. It is stacked with great hardcover and paperback mysteries along with many first-editions. Richard Katz, the owner (pictured on the left at right. What?), always has great authors in his store. He must have a great relationship with Robert Crais as apparently Joe Pike (I haven't read the book yet and don't want to spoil it) takes on the alias of Richard Katz. I had Richard autograph my book, too.
It was a real treat to get to spend time with my dad out and to go to the signing! Even though noone got my Erin-Go-Braugh-less joke.
What fun, I love stuff like this. I was a charter member of a mystery reading club in Wilmington, N.C. (The Final Chapter). It was such a blast.
